Breakdown of Weleda Toothpaste Ingredients

Weleda’s toothpaste uses natural ingredients different from other brands of natural toothpaste. With their deep expertise, they’ve brought back natural ingredients which were traditionally used. Some of them are:

Ratanhia Toothpaste for Medicinal Properties and to strengthen gums:

Derived from the Ratanhia plant (Krameria triandra), native to the Andean foothills in Peru and Ecuador, the Ratanhia root is renowned for its medicinal properties. It contains high concentrations of tannins, which act as astringents, effectively reducing inflammation. These properties make it an ideal ingredient for toothpaste and mouthwash products, aiding in treating throat irritation, swollen gums, cracked tongue, and canker sores. Moreover, Ratanhia strengthens gums and helps prevent gum infections. While Ratanhia is considered safe for most individuals, those with allergies to this plant should avoid its use. Ongoing studies continue to explore the full extent of Ratanhia's effectiveness.

Chestnut Bark Toothpaste for Antiseptic and Anti-inflammatory properties:

The Horse Chestnut tree boasts numerous potent substances throughout its parts, with the flowers and bark being highly valued in the pharmaceutical industry. Chestnut bark extracts possess astringent, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-edematous, and anti-exudative properties, which help reduce vascular permeability and swelling. As a result, these extracts are incorporated into oral care products, contributing positively to their effects.

Myrrh for a Natural Flavored Toothpaste and Medicinal Properties:

Myrrh is a resinous substance obtained from the bark of trees from the Commiphora species. Traditionally, it has been used for wound healing in the mouth and has shown effectiveness in treating gum swelling, mouth ulcers, and intramucosal wounds. Myrrh also aids in addressing bad breath and chapped lips, making it a valuable addition to oral care products. Additionally, it serves as a flavoring agent in certain food and beverages.

Calendula Toothpaste for an Anti Plaque Toothpaste and Medicinal Properties:

The flowers of the calendula plant are utilized to create medicinal extracts. These extracts have historically been applied to treat wounds, inflammations, rashes, and infections. In the realm of oral care, calendula is employed to alleviate sore throats, reduce oral swelling, and promote wound healing. By leveraging calendula's anti-inflammatory properties, toothpaste formulations can aid in restoring gum health and significantly reduce plaque.

Chamomile to prevent Periodontal Diseases and as a Natural Flavored Toothpaste:

Chamomile is an herbal medicine widely used to address skin and mucous membrane inflammations. Due to its efficacy in combating bacterial infections in the oral cavity, skin, and respiratory tract, chamomile is commonly included in toothpaste and mouthwash products designed to prevent periodontal diseases. Its potent properties make it a favored component for creating natural toothpaste options.

WELEDA Toothpaste Variants

The Weleda toothpaste comes in four variants, specially made with unique ingredients for oral care.

Weleda Ratanhia Toothpaste for Sensitive Gums and Cancer Patients

The toothpaste contains “Ratanhia” as the key ingredient, which was used by people of the Andean mountains in Peru. The sturdy roots of ratanhia contain tannin, which helps clean the teeth and sensitive gums. The abrasive action is given by a calcium-based natural and gentle abrasive agent. The essential oils of peppermint and spearmint provide a long-lasting refreshing taste. The Weleda, ratanhia variant comes as a natural and fluoride free toothpaste, making it free from all the chemical ingredients.

A clinical study was conducted to find the efficacy of ratanhia based herbal oral products for the prophylaxis of oral mucositis in cancer chemotherapy patients. The results showed a positive effect in reducing oral side effects in chemotherapy patients. This was conducted with patients from the Clinic for Women's Health at Johannes Gutenberg-University in Mainz, Germany.

There is less knowledge about the anticariogenic property of toothpaste, and this might not be a good option for someone prone to tooth decay.

The Weleda Ratanhia Toothpaste is recommended for people with sensitive gums, bleeding gums, cancer patients, and elderly.

Weleda Salt Toothpaste

Weleda salt toothpaste comes with sea salt and gentle mineral cleaners. Sea salt protects the teeth from acidic bacteria, balances the natural pH, prevents tooth decay, reduces inflammation of the gums and also minimizes the symptoms of gingivitis.

The presence of ratanhia root, chestnut bark, and myrrh has additional benefits to keep the gums healthy. The toothpaste has a salty taste with the freshness of peppermint, to give a feel of freshness throughout.

As a natural toothpaste, all the ingredients used are natural, eliminating surfactants, synthetic preservatives, color dyes, and other flavoring agents.

The fine ingredients and sea salt completely cleans the tooth and strengthens the gums, leaving a fresh and good feel.

Weleda salt toothpaste is a good option if looking for a good natural and fluoride free one. This can be great for an entire family, usable by everyone with no age limits.

Weleda Calendula Toothpaste for Sensitive Gums

Another variant of  Weleda comes with calendula oil, the flower commonly referred to as marigold. Calendula has soothing properties, again great for sensitive gums.

It helps repair the gum tissues and possesses antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a good choice to incorporate in a natural toothpaste. Calcium minerals have a gentle abrasive action and the fennel essential oil gives a pleasant taste.

The most common ingredient present in a natural toothpaste, peppermint, is absent in calendula toothpaste, making it preferable for people with mint sensitivity.

Like the other natural and fluoride free toothpaste options, it is free of chemical surfactants, synthetic preservatives, colored dyes, or other derivatives of mineral oil.

The Weleda Calendula Toothpaste is the best option for gentle mouth cleaning in people with sensitive gums who also want a fresh taste.

This toothpaste does not have active ingredients which could prevent tooth decay and tooth stains.

It is a highly recommended natural toothpaste for people sensitive to chemical ingredients.

Weleda Plant Gel Toothpaste for Sensitive Teeth and Gums

Weleda Plant Gel Toothpaste is a sensitive toothpaste. The plant based ingredients are cellulose powder, extracts of Myrrha resin, chamomile flower, and ratanhia root extract. The root extract has tannins, has an astringent action that absorbs excess moisture and silica helps in gentle cleaning.

It provides a fresh breath after brushing as a result of peppermint and spearmint essential oil.

This is also a natural and fluoride free toothpaste, free of all synthetic preservatives, artificial sweeteners, color dyes, flavors, or derivatives of mineral oil. All the ingredients are plant based with zero harmful effects on the oral cavity.

With its fine gentle ingredients, this is custom made and ideal for sensitive teeth and gums.
